Reggae, which came out of ska and rocksteady, is Jamaica’s home-grown popular music. The music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. Strongly influenced by traditional African and Caribbean music as well as by American R&B, reggae is characterized by a heavy bass line and its strong rhythm guitar on the offbeat.
The Wailers, a band that was started by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer in 1963, are generally agreed to be the most easily recognized group worldwide that made the change through all three stages of Jamaican music — from ska hits like "Simmer Down", through slower rocksteady like "Rolling Stone", to reggae....
