Frenchman's Cove - San San (just east of Port Antonio)
OK - where do I begin with Frenchman's Cove? This huge 42-acre lush property sits on the cliffs just above the sea. In its heyday in the 1960s, it was one of the prime hotels in Portland Jamaica for the rich & famous like The Beatles, Marlon Brando, Queen Elizabeth and many more. Sadly, it's in need of some tender loving care. Loyal guests love the retro charm of the place, while others complain that it's too rustic. There's a Great House that offers 10 spacious rooms with private baths and balconies that overlook the gardens. These rooms need some attention. There are also a variety of individual copper-roofed stone and glass cottages ("villas") of different sizes to accommodate up to six people. Some have been upgraded so, if rustic is not your cup of tea, ask for one. They're very private; no cottage is in sight of another. A/C and Wi-Fi are usually available, and the rates include complimentary continental breakfast with other meals on request for additional cost. Inside the rooms, you'll find cut stone walls and comfortable furnishings. The hotel's biggest plus is that it surrounds Frenchman's Cove Beach, one of the most beautiful in Jamaica. The other plus is the friendly, attentive staff. Let's hope they get their act together soon and restore this beauty to its former glory. Don't expect luxury, but you will enjoy the spectacular scenery. Phone: 876.993.7270 or 876.564.9779. Visit them on the web.

This funky, mellow Port Antonio mountain-top guest house, popular with European travelers, is an affordable yet sophisticated retreat. The eight rooms are scattered amid six acres high in the hills at the top of a bumpy, potholed and very steep road. Spotlessly clean with comfortable rooms, the buildings are white-washed with blue shutters. The owners do little advertising, getting most of their business from returning guests and word-of-mouth. With stunning views of Port Antonio’s twin harbors, the property is lush with tropical vegetation, its own private stream and waterfall, and even a small pool. This would be a great choice if you wanted to rent the whole compound for a fabulous family reunion or party! Phone: 876.993.3305. Visit them on the web.
Jamaica Palace Hotel - Williamsfield (near Drapers; 5 miles east of Port Antonio)
Not everyone is fond of "rustic" accommodations. If you want a more traditional HOTEL experience in Portland, you will probably enjoy the Jamaica Palace. Every time I drive past this faux-Greek revival beauty, I admire how well-maintained the exterior is. It truly is a lovely combination of European elegance and Caribbean charm! (Read more in our recent post.) The buildings are nestled on 5 tropically landscaped acres with flowers and birds. There are 80 spacious, custom-decorated rooms that have high ceilings and are airy and bright (25 rooms and 55 suites). Rooms have A/C, free Wi-Fi, satellite TV, a safe and private bathroom. Many also have private verandahs where you can relax and enjoy the view. There are several dining options as well as limited room service. The 114-foot pool was built in the shape of Jamaica. There is a black & white checkerboard theme that's carried out in floors and tiles inside and out. It's also famous for its amazing collection of art works that are displayed everywhere. Some guests dislike the artwork, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. Service here is gracious and friendly. Available on request are massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, and hair braiding. The Palace is within a short taxi ride of the most beautiful private coves/beaches in the Port Antonio area - Frenchman's Cove and San San Beach and Blue Lagoon. Of the many hotels in Portland Jamaica, Jamaica Palace would be an ideal spot for a special getaway weekend or romantic honeymoon. Phone: 876.993.7720. Kanopi House - at the Blue Lagoon, San San (just east of Port Antonio)
Wake up in the jungle every morning in your own private luxury treehouse! Opened to guests in 2009, Kanopi House offers 3 one-bedroom and 2 two-bedroom treehouses on their 6-acre property. I would best describe this as a very chic bed-and-breakfast. Nestled amid the 100-foot vine-wrapped trees surrounding the spectacular Blue Lagoon, these luxurious peak-roof bungalows are stunning but rustic at the same time. Kanopi House has “green certification”; no trees were cut down when it was built – buildings were designed to fit around the trees and occasionally one goes right through the roof. Furnishings were built by local craftsmen and local artists’ work is displayed throughout. There is no TV, but each room includes an iPod dock with Bose speakers and a library of DVDs is available. Each treehouse has a galley kitchen stocked with the essentials, ceiling fans and A/C. If you choose a meal plan, enjoy the company of other guests in the common “Living Room” with its wonderful views. Or rent the entire property if you wish. You may want to have a car at your disposal; you can swim in the lagoon but need a kayak to reach the beach (or a car). There are quite a few steps involved to navigate this hillside property, so it’s not well-suited for tiny children. Guests commend the staff for their warmth and friendliness. Kanopi House was voted the Best Hotel in Jamaica by visitors to the island in Jamaicans.com’s 2009 annual survey. Phone: 876.632.3213. Visit them on the web.
La Collina Villa - San San (just east of Port Antonio)
I personally love Jamaican villas, like La Collina, that feature cut stone walls. To me, they are part of the charm of rural Jamaica. La Collina sits on the hill above San San on a lush 2-acre property with commanding views. It features 3-bedrooms, 2-bathrooms, and sleeps 6 people. Amenities include cable TV, Wi-Fi, a fully equipped kitchen, a beautiful private pool and parking. In San San, you will be minutes from Frenchman's Cove, Jamaica's most beautiful beach, the Blue Lagoon, Reach Falls and all of the activities in and around charming Port Antonio. Mango Ridge Cottages - Port Antonio
Located in the hills about a a 10 minute walk from the center of Port Antonio, you'll find the popular Mango Ridge Cottages. There are three secluded cottages nestled in the rainforested foothills on densely fruited property. They are situated at three levels, at 100, 200 or 300 steps up a steep hill from the road, so you'll have to be in good shape to climb them everyday (but will get great exercise)! The views are breathtaking and visitors enjoy Mango Ridge for its friendly, welcoming hosts. The rates are VERY budget-friendly. Check prices, read what other travelers have to say, contact the owners and book your stay at TripAdvisor.
Match Resort Hotel - Dolphin Cove (just east of Port Antonio)
Open since 2012, this is a nice hidden gem, about a 15 minute drive east of Port Antonio, with friendly, accommodating owners and staff, and all the amenities (pool, good food, bar, hot water). I would describe it more as a large "Guest House" than a resort hotel. There are 17 clean, comfortably furnished rooms, one master suite and two villas. All rooms have en suite bathrooms and a balcony with chairs to enjoy the pool or sea view. They are equipped with A/C, mini-fridge and flatscreen TVs. There's also a nice, clean freshwater pool. Match Resort is highly recommended by guests for "service with a smile" and for the great food. The Jamaican-themed Scotch Bonnet Restaurant has both indoor and patio dining options. Try the fresh callaloo and salt fish for breakfast or the delicious lobster. The Dolphin Cove area is safe, very pleasant and you'll be close to all of Portland's top beaches and activities. Norse Hill Estate – San San (just east of Port Antonio)
This beautiful 4,000 square foot stone, wood and glass villa is one of the largest in the area and sits on 8 beautiful acres above Frenchman's Cove. It would be ideal for large families or groups because the 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms can accommodate up to 10 guests. Three bedrooms are on the second floor, a fourth is on the first floor. The second floor bedrooms have their own bathrooms and balconies; the first floor bedroom has a private patio as well as a sleeping loft that makes it a favorite for a couple with small children, or for those who find stairs a challenge. Amenities include A/C, ceiling fans, TV with DVD player, Wi-Fi, swimming pool and access to a private beach. The villa is staffed with a butler, housekeeper, chef and gardeners, and meals are prepared for additional cost. Rate includes admission to exclusive San San Beach and discount admission to Frenchman’s Cove. Norse Hill seems quite reasonably priced for a villa of this size and quality. Three night minimum. Check prices, read what other travelers have to say, and contact the owners at TripAdvisor.
Ocean Crest Guest House (B&B) – Titchfield Hill, Port Antonio
On the peninsula of Titchfield Hill, which separates the East and West harbors of Port Antonio, and overlooking Navy Island, this 3-story family-owned Bed & Breakfast has 9 guest rooms, some with balconies. Each clean, basic room has a private bathroom, cable TV, hot water, and fans (no A/C, which is common in this area). There is also a spacious kitchen available for the use of guests.
