geejam-port-antonioRanked #1 of the Port Antonio area hotels by travelers at TripAdvisor.com, Geejam, 10 minutes east in San San, is Island Outpost’s latest contribution to the island’s small, intimate and very hip luxury accommodations. They describe themselves as “an ‘über luxury’ insider escape”. Overlooking Mack Bay and the beautiful Caribbean, you will find posh lodging here in the lush rain forest. There are 3 cabins, one suite and a 3-bedroom villa (Sanwood). The cabins and suite have musical names (Ska, Rocksteady, etc.) because Geejam was first, and still is, a state-of-the-art recording studio for well-known worldwide recording artists. Jamaica Heights Resort – Spring Bank Rd., southwest of Boundbrook

jamaica-heights-port-antonioThis funky, mellow Port Antonio mountain-top guest house, popular with European travelers, is an affordable yet sophisticated retreat. The eight rooms are scattered amid six acres high in the hills at the top of a bumpy, potholed and very steep road. Spotlessly clean with comfortable rooms, the buildings are white-washed with blue shutters. The owners do little advertising, getting most of their business from returning guests and word-of-mouth. With stunning views of Port Antonio’s twin harbors, the property is lush with tropical vegetation, its own private stream and waterfall, and even a small pool. This would be a great choice if you wanted to rent the whole compound for a fabulous family reunion or party! Phone: 876.993.3305. Visit them on the web.

Kanopi House - at the Blue Lagoon, San San

kanopi-house-port-antonioWake up in the jungle every morning in your own private luxury treehouse! Opened to guests in 2009, Kanopi House offers 3 one-bedroom and 2 two-bedroom treehouses on their 6-acre property. I would best describe this as a very chic bed-and-breakfast. Nestled amid the 100-foot vine-wrapped trees surrounding the spectacular Blue Lagoon, these luxurious peak-roof bungalows are stunning but rustic at the same time. Kanopi House has “green certification”; no trees were cut down when it was built – buildings were designed to fit around the trees and occasionally one goes right through the roof. Furnishings were built by local craftsmen and local artists’ work is displayed throughout. There is no TV, but each room includes an iPod dock with Bose speakers and a library of DVDs is available. Each treehouse has a galley kitchen stocked with the essentials, ceiling fans and A/C. If you choose a meal plan, enjoy the company of other guests in the common “Living Room” with its wonderful views. Or rent the entire property if you wish. You may want to have a car at your disposal; you can swim in the lagoon but need a kayak to reach the beach (or a car). There are quite a few steps involved to navigate this hillside property, so it’s not well-suited for tiny children. Guests commend the staff for their warmth and friendliness. Kanopi House was voted the Best Hotel in Jamaica by visitors to the island in Jamaicans.com’s 2009 annual survey. Phone: 876.632.3213. Visit them on the web.

Each clean, basic room has a private bathroom, cable TV, hot water, and fans (no A/C, which is common in this area). There is also a spacious kitchen available for the use of guests. The newer top floor rooms apparently have the best views. Phone: 876.993.4024. Visit them on the web.
