You can be close to the shopping and nightlife of Ocho Rios, yet enjoy the laid-back and quiet ambiance of a smaller boutique hotel. This pleasant property has 4 charming rooms, each one unique, plus the private “Cozy Cottage”. Rooms are beautifully furnished and decorated, clean, and have extra touches like fresh flowers. Blue Harbour Villas Inn – Port Maria (Ocho Rios area)

The Bay of Port Maria in Saint Mary was the private domain of Sir Henry Morgan, the infamous pirate and first governor of Jamaica. He had a small house there where he spied on and seized Spanish galleons that might have strayed south from Cuba into his waters. In this very same area, tucked around the half-moon bay, sits Blue Harbour, built by the famed British playwright-author-actor, Sir Noel Coward, as his first Caribbean hideaway named "Coward's Folly". This lushly landscaped property has entertained many celebrities like my favorite, Katherine Hepburn. It is located along the now-complete North Highway, about 2 hours from Montego Bay and just east of Ocho Rios, with beautiful views of the Caribbean, the Blue Mountains, Cabarita Island and Port Maria Bay. The engaging owners offer the original 3 villas for rent, plus a newer one (or you can rent the entire estate at once), and can accommodate up to 20 guests. They could use a little sprucing up but are pleasant, and have spacious verandahs. Some of Noel Coward’s original furnishings are still part of the décor, and there are photos of film stars who stayed in each room. Enjoy the history and nostalgia! A staff chef specializes in Jamaican cuisine. The highlight is probably the saltwater swimming pool right on the sea, which is designed to be drained and refilled weekly. Go kayaking, snorkeling or visit Mr. Coward’s more famous residence, Firefly, on the hill behind the hotel - you can’t beat the view anywhere else in the Caribbean! On a hillside surrounded by lush tropical foliage, Casa Maria offers 20 newly-renovated rooms away from the crowds, yet only minutes from the major attractions, shopping and nightlife of Ocho Rios. It’s located in Port Maria, a picturesque spot on the North Coast steeped in explorer, pirate, slave rebellion, and movie star history. Within a 5-minute walk from Tower Isle Jerk Center and a 5-minute drive into Ocho Rios, this lovely villa offers 4 modern, spacious and beautifully furnished bedrooms, each with private bathroom, and a very spacious “penthouse” (or Honeymoon Suite), with its own Jacuzzi and surrounding verandah, which can accommodate 6 people. Each room has a ceiling fan, fridge, coffee/tea-making facilities and mosquito nets. Cable TV and internet access are available on request. Their very reasonable daily rates include continental breakfast but, for an extra fee, a full breakfast will be prepared for you. Repeat guests remark on the friendliness and hospitality of the proprietors and say they “were taken care of as if members of the family”. Chrisann's Beach Resort – Tower Isle (Ocho Rios area)

This property is composed of two 2-story condominium apartment buildings that hug a private courtyard pool and overlook the Caribbean. The resort sits right on its own private beach. Each apartment is individually owned so they will not all be the same. They range from studios to 3-bedroom suites. All apartments have a private patio or balcony, many overlooking the pool. Each is nicely decorated and has a fully equipped kitchen and air conditioning. Daily housekeeping service is included. Cable television and DVD players are provided. Having stayed here, I can report that the service is very friendly and we loved our comfortable condo! Although Chrisann's is on the beach, the wonderful Reggae Beach is only a 10-minute walk away. Galina Breeze – Galina (Port Maria & Ocho Rios area)

Try out this quiet and peaceful hidden gem in Galina, a small fishing town near Port Maria. This used to be the Trade Winds as far back as the 1950s. Recently refurbished, each of the 14 spacious rooms at Galina Breeze is nicely decorated and has A/C and cable TV. The private bathrooms are clean & there is plenty of hot water. Included in the rate is a full breakfast. Views of the Caribbean from the verandahs are spectacular. There is a pool on the property and a great spot for snorkeling on-site. Experience the real Jamaica in this colonial-style inn in one of the loveliest areas of the island. Paradise Jamaica is a cozy bed and breakfast inn located just outside Oracabessa, about 30 minutes east of Ocho Rios. Rooms are clean and comfortable; one has a private bathroom while the others are shared. And they are offered at VERY reasonable rates considering that breakfast is included (starting at US$35!!). River Lodge Guest House - Robins Bay

River Lodge offers 3 unique, rustic Jamaica-style cottages set amid lush grounds and a big lawn with hammocks and shady places. The lodge is built from an old Spanish Fort, right in the rain forest of St. Mary between Port Maria and Annotto Bay, in a small Rasta community. The rooms of are basic and charming; the shower is cold but refreshing. Don't go if you want luxury & amenities! You can hear the sea at night from your room, and a natural spring also runs through the property. There's great hiking in this area with old ruins, waterfalls and beach coves. Known as Strawberry Fields in the 1970s, this 18-acre property on the North Coast in the little fishing village of Robin’s Bay was an infamous countercultural campground & cottage resort. From 1987 to 2007, the owners operated it as Sonrise Beach Resort. Now offering a unique eco-tourism experience, they have renamed it Strawberry Fields Together! and have added brand new cottages and new eco-adventure tours. There are 5 standard cottages (two with shared bath) and 3 deluxe cottages, from simple to luxurious; each is unique, nicely furnished and comfortable. The property’s spectacular tropical landscape encompasses a beautiful white sand beach with good snorkeling. The hosts and staff are warm and friendly and they serve delicious Jamaican food.
